  • Compact Disc (CD) + Digital Album

After years devoted to collecting music and running labels, Malmoe based Martin Brodin presents his debut album. The MB Disco boss has created an album that is his take on disco and the roots of dance music. Martin presents an album of modern disco that is informed by classic production values and contemporary grooves. Unlike the glut of re-edits and nu-disco by numbers, this album features gorgeous melodies and sumptuous instrumentation. Martin shows that proper modern disco is about much more than a loop, creating classy tracks that will stand the test of time.

The LP stems from a pivotal change in musical direction in 2010, which saw him swap deep house and tech grooves for all things disco. After spending a long time listening to his extensive record collection and getting inspired by the disco sounds within, he set up MB Disco. This label became an outlet for himself and likeminded friends, such as Ilija Rudman, Ray Mang and Chicken Lips. MB Disco also released updates of classics by Newcleus, Giorgio Moroder and worked with Leroy Burgess. This LP is the natural progression, featuring all types of disco inspired grooves. In a past musical life, Martin ran celebrated deep house imprint Deeplay Music, and its techier sister, Deeplay Soultec, as well as releasing music for labels like Buzzin’ Fly and Mood Music. Collecting music has been Martin’s passion for over 30 years, so it comes as no surprise this his productions are informed by the type of knowledge that can only be gained with this type of devotion. From Yello to Depeche Mode to Lil Louis to First Choice, all these influences informed Martin’s unique sound.

So, what about the album? Opener Badabing is a cool bass groover with lifting synths and floating keys. Smooth vocals and a revolving bassline do the work on the jazzy Humming Bird. Oh Yeah is a main room banger with storming guitars, bassline and vocals to match. If you sense a slight influence of I.N.X.S, well then you’re right. Agogo features said percussion instrument, which shines over purring synths. Strings Attack marries classic disco strings with smiling brass and bass power. A moving rhythm section backs the imploring vocals on the rework of Bryan Ferry’s Don’t Stop The Dance. Funky Gura lives up to its name courtesy of smart guitars and star gazing synths. Swoon to the subtle melancholia of Vicious Games, the true classic of Yello. Trapeze Disco offers heady synths dreams, with a side helping of liver percussion. The vibraphones come out on the bumping and in places robotic Wilmer Pt 1/2. On The Island ends proceedings with shaken not stirred percussion and delightful keys.
